The Breitling MedCup/ Balearia Ibiza-Formentera trophy regatta that took place off the Balearic Islands yesterday was marked by a dramatic collision between Santa Ana Stay Calm, captained by Stuart Robinson and Bribon, captained by Jose Cusi with King Juan Carlos on board. Santa Ana struck Bribon at the windward mark of the first race, as the wind dropped whilst making a port tack approach. Santa Ana attempted to duck the King’s craft at the very last second after making a late call to dip in an effort to try to find a space in the racks of the starboard tack boats, but ended up colliding with Bribon just forward of the shrouds, cracking the topsides of the yacht in the process. The impact left a large hole in Santa Ana’s bow, and both craft are now out of the regatta, making temporary repairs before leaving for Palma de Mallorca, where the damage will be fully assessed and repaired.
Bribon is expected to make a request for redress, in an effort to seek average points for yesterday’s race as well as the remaining races in the regatta. There are two races still to go in this series, with Siemens leading Mutua Madrileña by just one point after yesterday’s regattas, but Mutua leads overall by a considerable number of points over the team’s nearest rival, the US craft Warpath, with Caixa Galicia in third place overall and Siemens fourth.
