The Stage is Set
It has been revealed that the La Fe Hospital is on the point of making history, as plans are well under way to undertake two hand transplants. Dr Pedro Cavadas and his team are now almost all set to undertake the operation on a woman who lost both hands in a firework accident twenty years ago. It is believed that the new limbs will be grafted on below the elbow in an operation marking a first for an operation of this sort in Spain. The operation has the backing of the Health Department of the Valencian Government, the National Transplant Organisation and the Health Ministry, and now research is being undertaken to find suitable limbs to transplant, in order that they are not rejected by the recipient’s immune system.
