Volvo Ocean Race & the Americas Cup
The organizers of the Volvo Ocean Race that starts from Alicante in October next year, revealed yesterday that a Russian syndicate would participate for the first time. Backed by Oleg Zherebtsov, a businessman from St Petersburg, the yacht will be skippered by former Austrian Olympic star Andreas Hanakamp, whilst Michael Woods who was Director for Race Operations for the Volvo Ocean Race 2001/2002 was named as Team Manager. This latest announcement brings to seven the number of confirmed entries for the Volvo Ocean race 2008/2009.
As rumours continue to fly that Alinghi suffered some serious damage during a training exercise in the Bay of Valencia, TeamOrigin the British syndicate that is set to compete in the next Americas Cup Races, continues its preparations, by announcing that it is to become the Main Partner for OnBoard, the Royal Yachting Association grass roots sailing programme in the UK. The announcement is seen as a strategic and operational agreement, designed to attract young people to the sport, and develop a firm foundation for the future of UK sailing.
